In some "private" institutions in the area, many students pay high tuition fees, receive sometimes high-quality information, but obtain diplomas that are neither recognized by the state nor validated by any regulatory body. Diplomas that are useless both in the job market and for further studies.
Thus, the communications officer of the National Authority for Quality Assurance in Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (Anaq-Sup) explains the accreditation process. "The regulations for the Bachelor's-Master's-Doctorate (LMD) system require the institution to be accredited. We receive several complaints from students. It's not enough to have a name at the school; it's important to find out. Some students don't do enough research. Everything is spread by word of mouth," he emphasizes.
In fact, Senegal has 298 private universities, and the majority of them meet the standards. Among the affected students are many Guinean, Ivorian, Gabonese, and Senegalese nationals, often from modest families who have made sacrifices to finance their children's education.
Some only discover the deception when looking for a job, doing an internship or applying for certification of these diplomas upon returning to their respective countries.
Anaq-Sup reminds that the list of accredited institutions is published regularly on its official website and updated. It encourages prospective students, as well as parents, to systematically check the recognition of a school before enrolling.
Faced with this situation, the authorities are announcing stricter control measures, including sanctions against repeat offenders.
During the presentation of the National Agenda for the Transformation of Higher Education, the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Dr. Abdourhamane Diouf, announced that out of 298, 155 do not have any official authorization. He insisted on giving these institutions one last chance to regularize their status.
