Université : Abdou Mbow dénonce la « précarité inédite » et la crise alimentaire des étudiants
The situation of Senegalese students has resurfaced in the political debate. During a speech at the National Assembly, on the sidelines of the installation of the ad hoc commission tasked with deciding on the lifting of Farba Ngom's parliamentary immunity, MP Abdou Mbow raised the alarm about the deteriorating living conditions in universities, denouncing a precariousness he described as unprecedented.
According to the parliamentarian, the food insecurity affecting students reflects a deep social crisis. "For the first time in Senegal's history, we are seeing students forced to pool their money to prepare their own meals in order to feed themselves," he stated, describing a situation he considers alarming.
The MP believes these difficulties arise in a context marked by widespread social and economic tensions. He specifically points to market saturation, strikes in certain sectors, and the rising cost of living, which, according to him, further weaken students, who are already facing delays in scholarship payments and inadequate university social services.
Abdou Mbow also criticized the authorities for not paying enough attention to the situation on campuses. He believes that government priorities should focus more on social emergencies. "Students are living in extremely difficult conditions while the social front is boiling over," he argued.
This statement comes amid growing concerns from student organizations about deteriorating living conditions in public universities. For several years, they have been denouncing issues such as delays in scholarship payments, housing difficulties, overcrowded university restaurants, and inadequate teaching infrastructure.
For many observers, the social situation on campuses remains a major challenge for authorities. Access to adequate food, housing, and social services is, in their view, a central element in ensuring academic success and preventing tensions within universities.
