While several public universities in Senegal have been shaken for several days by strike movements and clashes between students and law enforcement, the Front for the Defence of the Republic (FDR) published a vigorous statement on Monday denouncing the government's handling of this crisis which continues to worsen.
Students are protesting against persistent delays in the payment of their scholarships, particularly those owed to Master's students. This has led students to increase their protest actions.
In its statement, the FDR considers the students' demands "legitimate" and accuses the authorities of failing to provide an appropriate response. According to the coalition, the PASTEF-led government bears a direct share of responsibility for the worsening situation.
The FDR links the current blockages to the financial repercussions of what it calls a "catastrophe caused by hidden debt." It believes these budgetary difficulties are the root cause of the state's inability to honor its commitments to students.
"The Prime Minister will have to answer for this unspeakable treachery," insists the FDR, which believes that the effects of this financial crisis could be even more serious for the country.
Call for restraint and popular support
While expressing its "unconditional" support for their demands, the FDR nevertheless urges student organizations to avoid violence and to prioritize methods of action likely to rally public opinion to their cause. The front emphasizes the need to maintain a climate conducive to calm within higher education institutions, already severely disrupted by the tensions of recent days.
The statement condemns the police repression observed on some campuses and accuses the government of opting for "manipulative announcements" rather than seeking lasting solutions. The coalition warns that these methods will "only worsen the crisis."
To break the deadlock, she calls on the executive branch to immediately open "serious" negotiations with students and their representatives, in order to establish the conditions for a return to calm in the university environment.
