Violences à l'UCAD: Amsatou Sow sidibé engage une mission de monitoring
Following the serious incidents that occurred on February 9, 2026 at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the National Human Rights Commission of Senegal (CNDH) has undertaken a joint monitoring mission with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Regional Office for West Africa (OHCHR-ROWA).
Led by Professor Amsatou Sow Sidibé, the delegation visited the Idrissa Pouye National Hospital Center to inquire about the health of students injured during the clashes. Discussions allowed for an assessment of the medical care provided and the gathering of information on the circumstances of the injuries.
The mission then met with the Dakar Central Police Command to review the unfolding events, the arrests made, and the procedural safeguards surrounding the ongoing investigations. The CNDH emphasized the strict respect for the fundamental rights of individuals held in police custody.
Discussions were also held with the leaders of the student associations concerned, in order to hear their concerns and their version of events.
The delegation finally visited the family of student Abdoulaye Ba, who died during the incidents, to offer their condolences and express their solidarity.
In its statement, the CNDH calls for calm and restraint from all parties. It advocates "for diligent, impartial and transparent investigations" to establish responsibility.
The institution also calls for the swift opening of inclusive negotiations between the various actors, to avoid a further escalation of tensions.
The monitoring mission continues. Recommendations will be formulated and submitted to the relevant authorities following this assessment.
