Ziguinchor : violents affrontements entre étudiants et forces de l’ordre
Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (UASZ) has, for the past few hours, been the scene of violent clashes between students and members of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI). This escalation of violence follows a standoff between a group of Master's students and the CROUS/Z administration.
The crisis stemmed from students' attempts to stage "Ticket-Free Days" (JST) to protest their living conditions. This showdown prompted the CROUS/Z management, acting on instructions from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), to order the immediate closure of the only functioning university restaurant.
From dawn, a large police presence was deployed around the campus to prevent any further unrest. However, this massive police presence was perceived as a provocation by the students still on site, even though most departments had already finished their exams.
The already toxic atmosphere worsened dramatically with the news of a student's death yesterday at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD). According to several accounts gathered near the university residences, this tragedy "added fuel to the fire," transforming a local protest into a movement of solidarity and revolt.
Currently, the situation remains extremely confused. Exchanges of projectiles and tear gas are disrupting all economic activities and traffic along the main road leading to the university.
