Souveraineté énergétique : Le gouvernement active sa stratégie “Gas-to-X”

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced on Wednesday that his government has taken a new step in the implementation of its “Gas-to-Power, Gas-to-Industry and Gas-to-X” strategy, the cornerstone of national energy sovereignty, according to the Council of Ministers press release.

A National Committee, under the Prime Minister's office, was established to steer, coordinate, and arbitrate major decisions related to this vast project, while ensuring the economic and environmental sustainability of the projects. This approach, in line with energy sector reforms, aims to develop the country's gas potential through structuring projects such as the Senegal Gas Network (RGS), the Yakaar-Teranga and Sangomar fields, as well as the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, not to mention applications in the hydraulic, agricultural, port, and airport sectors.

According to the same source, the ambition displayed by the authorities is to make natural gas a strategic lever for development capable, by 2026-2027, of ensuring cleaner, more competitive electricity production, mainly from national resources.

The government hopes to reduce dependence on hydrocarbon imports, reduce the energy bill and strengthen the country's industrial competitiveness.

On the technical side, the press release notes, the transformation of gas into energy and derivative products requires efficient infrastructure, specialized skills, and controlled logistics, particularly for serving remote areas. Added to this are environmental imperatives: the management of greenhouse gas emissions, the safety of facilities, and the preservation of ecosystems and local communities.

It should be noted that the “Gas-to-X” strategy aims to reposition Senegal as a key player in the energy transition in West Africa, capable of combining sovereignty, competitiveness and sustainability.
