Bassin du fleuve Gambie : baisse généralisée des niveaux d’eau aux stations de suivi

The Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade published its latest hydrological bulletin on Thursday, September 4, 2025, on the evolution of water levels in the Gambia River and its tributaries. The data collected reveals a general downward trend at most stations, although levels remain higher than those recorded during the same period in 2024.

Tributaries in decline

At the tributaries, the Diaguiri station recorded a drop of 42 cm, with a current level of 2.90 m compared to 3.32 m the day before. The same observation was made at Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where the water level fell from 1.79 m to 1.74 m, a decrease of 5 cm.

In Goumbayel (Niériko), the drop is slighter with only 1 cm less compared to the previous day, while in Diahra Pont, the day's readings did not reach the installed scale.

At the Niokolo Koba station, the morning data were not transmitted, but the previous day, the level was 5.73 m, much higher than last year's level (4.40 m).

The Gambia River follows the same trend

On the main course of the river, the downward trend is confirmed:

• In Kédougou, the water level is 3.70 m compared to 3.94 m the day before, a decrease of 24 cm.

• In Mako, the decline is more marked with a drop of 32 cm (3.61 m against 3.93 m on September 3).

• In Simenti, the water level fell from 7.22 m to 6.88 m, a decline of 34 cm.

• Finally, in Gouloumbou, the level stood at 7.51 m, down 13 cm compared to the previous day.

Levels higher than those of 2024

Despite this downward trend, current levels remain generally higher than those observed at the same time last year. For example, in Kédougou, the level on September 4, 2024, was only 3.04 m, compared to 3.70 m today. The same is true in Simenti, where the level was 4.66 m in 2024, well below the current 6.88 m.

Alert thresholds still far away

Hydrological services point out that the alert levels have not yet been reached. They are set at 7 meters in Kédougou, 6 meters in Mako, 13 meters in Simenti and 12 meters in Gouloumbou.

The Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade, however, calls for continued vigilance, as the hydrological situation can change rapidly depending on rainfall in the basin.
