Hausse notable du niveau du fleuve Gambie : vigilance recommandée à Kédougou et Mako

The Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE), through the Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade, published its daily hydrological bulletin on the situation of the Gambia River and its tributaries this Thursday, August 28, 2025. The data collected show a general upward trend in several localities, notably in Kédougou and Mako, while a slight decrease is observed in Simenti and Gouloumbou.

Tributaries under surveillance

In Diaguiri, the water level recorded at 8 a.m. was 4.66 meters, compared to only 2.10 meters at the same time last year. An even more marked increase was noted in Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where the level reached 4.05 meters, an increase of 220 centimeters in one day. In Niokolo Koba, the trend also remains upward, with 6.97 meters compared to 4.47 meters in 2024.

On the other hand, some stations such as Diahra Pont and Goumbayel were unable to transmit their readings for the day, limiting comparison with the previous year.

The Gambia River is gradually rising

In Kédougou, the river level has now reached 4.93 meters, compared to 3.53 meters the day before. This represents an increase of 1.40 meters in 24 hours. Even though the alert level is set at 7 meters, the current trend calls for increased vigilance.

The same situation is observed in Mako where the river rose from 3.65 meters to 4.05 meters in one day, with an annual progression of almost 85 centimeters compared to 2024.

Decrease in Simenti and Gouloumbou

Conversely, the Simenti and Gouloumbou stations recorded a slight decrease. At Simenti, the level fell to 6.30 meters compared to 6.57 meters the previous day, well below the alert level set at 13 meters. At Gouloumbou, the drop was 23 centimeters, bringing the level back to 7.31 meters, again far from the critical threshold of 12 meters.

An early warning system to prevent risks

These daily readings, carried out manually at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., make it possible to anticipate flood risks and inform local authorities and local communities. The monitoring system plays a crucial role in flood prevention and protecting communities along the Gambia River.
