Montée rapide des eaux : le Sénégal en état d’alerte fluviale
The latest hydrological bulletin dated August 15, 2025, highlights a contrasting situation on Senegal's main rivers. The Kédougou station on the Gambia River recorded a spectacular rise in level, rising from 3.95 m on August 14 at 8 a.m. to 6.40 m on August 15 at 4 p.m., an increase of nearly 2.5 m in 24 hours. The alert level, set at 7 m, remains close, signaling an imminent risk of overflow.
On the Senegal River, levels are rising more moderately. The Bakel and Matam stations saw their heights increase from 8.09 m to 8.29 m and from 6.43 m to 6.77 m respectively, while the alert levels are 10 m for Bakel and 8 m for Matam. This development reflects a less dramatic upward trend but nevertheless requires constant attention.
Authorities are warning that continued rainfall could quickly cause rivers to reach critical levels, with possible overflows in low-lying areas. Riverside residents and those engaged in economic activities are urged to be extremely vigilant and take the necessary measures to limit flood risks.
The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation is constantly monitoring the situation using hydrometric stations and reiterates that the State will undertake all necessary measures to secure the populations and infrastructure along the Gambia and Senegal rivers.
