Assainissement à Dakar : la station d'épuration de Cambérène bientôt opérationnelle
The Cambérène wastewater treatment plant expansion and modernization project is more than 95% complete. This was announced by ONAS Director General Séni Diène during a field visit attended by the Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), Dr. Rami Ahmad. The news was reported by Le Soleil in its Saturday, September 6, edition.
Financed by the IDB to the tune of 42 billion CFA francs, this new infrastructure represents a major technological breakthrough for sanitation in the capital. It will treat wastewater from 14 municipalities and increase its capacity from 19,000 to 92,000 m³ per day.
The plant includes an odor treatment system, a cogeneration system that covers 70% of its energy needs, and a tertiary treatment unit. The latter will produce 11,300 m³ of reusable water per day that can be used in agriculture (market gardening, arboriculture, horticulture) and public works, thus supporting a circular economy approach.
Another major innovation: a 1.3 km marine outfall, the first of its kind in West Africa, which will allow treated water to be discharged into the sea without impacting the coastal environment. The stabilized sludge resulting from the treatment will also be transformed into organic fertilizer for agriculture.
For his part, Dr. Rami Ahmad expressed the IDB's satisfaction. He recalled that the institution is currently financing 28 projects in Senegal, for a total amount of $1.8 billion (approximately 1,190 billion CFA francs), and that it will continue to support the priorities of the Senegalese government.
