Saraya : Le débordement du marigot Mérékhoulé isole plusieurs villages

The Saraya department is facing a new challenge this rainy season. The overflowing of the Mérékhoulé backwater has submerged the usual passage, isolating several villages, including Missirah Dantila, Samécouta and Toubacouta, as well as other surrounding communities.

The traditional bridge, the only crossing point across the swamp, is completely submerged, making traffic impossible. As a result, residents, students, shopkeepers, and patients find themselves stranded and struggling to go about their daily activities.

"We've been suffering for several years. Every winter, it's the same ordeal. The state must act to open up our villages," says A. Tandian, a local man, by phone.

Beyond the daily difficulties, this situation also threatens the Gamou of Missirah Dantila, scheduled for September 3 to 5. The influx of worshippers, usually numerous, risks being compromised by the inaccessibility of the roads.

Faced with this recurring problem, the population is calling for the construction of a real bridge across the Mérékhoulé backwater. For them, only sustainable infrastructure can end the chronic isolation of the villages and guarantee safe mobility, even during periods of heavy rain.

Pour calmer la colère du marigot Mérékhoulé, les Saltigués de Saraya recommandent aux populations d'être calmes et sereines en psalmodiant 50 fois : "khouli beut, khouli beut..."
