COUPS ET BLESSURES VOLONTAIRES : 3 ans requis contre O. Sow, pour avoir sectionné à la machette le bras de S. Mbaye
Shepherd O. Sow is on trial for severing the left arm of shepherd S. Mbaye with a machete. The two shepherds had crossed paths in the bush with their respective flocks. A minor argument escalated into a bloody fight.
It was in these circumstances that O. Sow struck S. Mbaye with a machete, severing his left arm. Armed with a medical certificate, S. Mbaye filed a complaint with the gendarmerie against O. Sow for assault and battery.
In the dock of the Thiès criminal court, O. Sow admitted to the facts. He then claimed to have acted in self-defense, saying that S. Mbaye had attacked him with an iron bar.
However, he stated that he was not armed. "When we argued, he brandished a machete and came towards me. Defenseless, I raised my hands in a gesture of peace. Despite this, he tried to strike me on the head with the machete. While protecting myself, I lost my left arm, severed by the machete. I can no longer work, even though I have a family to support," S. Mbaye explained. He then demanded 40 million CFA francs in damages.
The public prosecutor considered the facts to be consistent and requested a three-year prison sentence.
The verdict is expected on February 17, 2026.
