A tragedy occurred this Tuesday morning in Medina. A 39-year-old Togolese woman, homeless, took her own life in a shelter for women in distress. She hanged herself just hours after being admitted, according to Seneweb sources.

Monday, October 20: A woman in distress referred to a shelter

The story begins on the afternoon of Monday, October 20, 2025, around 4 p.m. Sister E. Mbaye, manager of the "Rose Virginie" home located in Fass, receives a call from a social worker, Mrs. B., who works at the Dalal Diam hospital in Guédiawaye.

The latter offers to take in a patient who has just finished treatment. The woman has no family, no specific destination, and even less means to support herself. Sister E. Mbaye agrees to house her in her reception center.

To take the patient to the home, the social worker puts her in touch with one of her colleagues. The two of them are taken into a taxi headed to the center. But a few minutes later, the social worker calls the sister back to inform her that the woman has refused to be accompanied, preferring to go to the sisters' home alone.

The story of a broken life

Around 4 p.m., the woman arrived at the home where her sister was waiting for her. She identified herself as AE Akoli, 39 years old, of Togolese nationality.

In response to the manager's questions about her family situation, she recounts a life marked by hardship. She arrived from Togo three years ago and lost both her parents long ago. She lived in Senegal with her Ghanaian boyfriend, but he eventually left her.

Destitute, she rented a room in the suburbs until she could no longer pay the rent. Evicted by her landlord, she found herself homeless before being hospitalized and then referred to this shelter.

A Fatal Night

Around 8 p.m., after settling in the new resident, Sister E. Mbaye decided to go home, leaving the Togolese woman alone in the reception house.

As she was leaving, the manager wanted to give her the two keys to the main doors, but the victim suggested she keep them, saying she didn't need them since she didn't intend to leave. The sister then locked both doors before leaving the premises.

Tuesday morning: The macabre discovery

This Tuesday morning, Sister E. Mbaye returns to the home. She knocks on the door but gets no answer. The two front doors are still locked, just as she had left them the day before.

She opened it with her keys and entered the room where the resident was staying, without seeing her. It was upon entering the second room, which had five iron beds, that she made the terrible discovery: A. Emilie Akoli was hanging using a brown scarf attached to the front of a bed, made of iron bars about 1.50 meters high.

Investigation in progress

Alerted, police officers from the Medina district police station immediately went to the scene. The Technical and Scientific Police were requested to carry out the usual investigations. A requisition was issued to conduct an autopsy of the body.

The public prosecutor has been notified of this tragedy. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of this suicide.
