The Mbour Magistrates' Court was the scene of a particularly moving trial. In tears on the stand, O. Faye recounted the ordeal and years of abuse she said she suffered at the hands of her husband, O. Diop, a mason described as a notorious alcoholic residing in Nianing.
According to L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, this domestic violence reached its peak the day after the Tabaski festival, during an assault stemming from a demand for money for alcohol. On that day, the newspaper recounts, O. Diop, who wanted to join his drinking companions but had no money to his name, demanded that his wife give him 200 FCFA.
Faced with her categorical refusal, who legitimately accused him of his erratic behavior and repeated violence, the bricklayer flew into a rage and savagely punched her, causing her serious bodily injuries. According to the account of events presented in court, O. Faye owed her life only to the urgent intervention of her neighbors.
Armed with a medical certificate attesting to an 18-day period of temporary incapacity for work (ITT), the victim finally filed a complaint with the Nianing gendarmerie brigade. Arrested by investigators, O. Diop confessed to all the charges before being remanded in custody. Before the judges, the defendant reiterated his confession, attempting to attribute his outburst of rage solely to the "effects of alcohol."
Throughout the proceedings, the newspaper of the Future Media Group reports, he begged his wife for forgiveness, but she remained unmoved by his ordeal. With the public prosecutor requesting the strict application of the law, the court adjourned the case for deliberation. The final verdict is expected this Thursday.
