«Ce que nous ne pouvons pas accepter…» : Les précisions de Khadim Bamba Diagne sur l’exploitation pétrolière
The Senegalese government has no intention of backing down from its push to renegotiate oil contracts. "We are ruling absolutely nothing out," Khadim Bamba Diagne asserted in an interview with Jeune Afrique. The permanent secretary of the Strategic Orientation Committee for Oil and Gas (COS-Petrogaz) emphasized that Woodside and BP will be exploiting the resources for 30 to 50 years. Therefore, "it's better that in the early years, everything is very clear, that we can identify the errors and mistakes, correct them, and move forward," he said.
Today, the government wants the exploitation of these resources to not only benefit these companies, but also allow our countries to reap the rewards. "We cannot accept exploitation that leaves African countries with negative externalities while others take the resources. Our oil and gas are offshore. And when it's offshore, it impacts a sector where a large portion of Senegalese people work: fishing," asserts Mr. Diagne.
Indeed, due to the conflict in the Middle East, oil prices have literally skyrocketed, generating significant revenue for the companies. Mr. Diagne wants Senegal to also benefit from these resources: "With the crisis we are going through, we know very well that the companies are rubbing their hands together. Senegal should also start rubbing its hands together because the price of hydrocarbons has exploded, and therefore all the other partners in the joint venture should also benefit from this," he says.
Senegal is ready to do anything to renegotiate the contracts that bind the country to the major oil companies.
