Émigration clandestine : 164 migrants interceptés au large de Djifer
Elements of the Fimela territorial brigade, supported by the Fatick intervention squadron, intercepted, this Thursday, March 6, 2026, around 3:30 p.m., a pirogue carrying 164 candidates for illegal emigration off the coast of the village of Djifer, in the commune of Palmarin Facao.
According to reports, the boat left Katong (Gambia) on the evening of Monday, March 2nd, around 11 p.m., bound for Spain. Upon reaching the coast of Saint-Louis, one of the outboard motors broke down in rough seas, forcing the passengers to turn back.
Off the coast of Djifer, the four Senegalese captains fled in a small boat, abandoning the migrants. A Senegalese fisherman on board then took control of the pirogue and steered it to within about 10 km of Djifer, where fishermen alerted the gendarmerie.
The swift intervention of the security forces enabled the arrest of the 164 migrants, of Senegalese, Gambian and Malian nationalities.
Equipment was also seized, including fuel, outboard motors and the dugout canoe.
The migrants were taken to the Fimela territorial brigade for the purposes of the investigation.
