Ngor : Une pirogue partie de Gambie avec 154 migrants échoue, 60 personnes interpellées par la gendarmerie

As part of the fight against irregular migration, the local brigade in Ngor, supported by a squadron from the Gendarmerie Intervention Legion (LGI), apprehended 60 migrants on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the Club Med beach, Seneweb learned from Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye. The group apprehended consisted of 52 boys and eight girls.

The surveillance system set up by the gendarmerie was alerted by the presence of a pirogue carrying migrants. The vessel was heading towards the Senegalese coast. The gendarmes immediately intervened to intercept the occupants of the pirogue before they could disappear into the surrounding area.

A journey that went wrong

According to initial findings of the investigation, the pirogue left Gambia on the night of Sunday, October 26, 2025. Its intended destination was Spain. There were 154 passengers on board at the outset.

After several days adrift at sea, the pirogue finally washed ashore on the beach of the Club Med resort in Ngor. Difficult sailing conditions and a likely mechanical failure forced the migrants to land on the Senegalese coast, far from their initial destination.

One question remains: what happened to the other 94 passengers who were on board when the ship departed from The Gambia? Several hypotheses are possible. Some may have disembarked before arriving in Ngor. Others may have disappeared at sea during the crossing. The investigation will have to shed light on this mystery.

The operation allowed the gendarmes to seize several pieces of equipment. They recovered a 40 horsepower outboard motor, fuel, and two canoes.

The investigation continues to identify the organizers of this attempted irregular migration. The smugglers who arranged the journey from The Gambia are being actively sought.

The 60 migrants apprehended are currently being questioned by investigators to reconstruct the full sequence of events of this perilous crossing.

The National Gendarmerie reminds the public of the importance of its cooperation in the fight against irregular migration. Its call center is available free of charge 24 hours a day at 800 00 20 20 or 123 for any useful information.
