"Vidéo indécente" : un tribunal condamne deux TikTokeurs à se marier
A court in Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, has ordered Islamic police to complete the marriage between two TikTok celebrities for posting a video deemed "indecent," two judicial and police sources told AFP on Tuesday.
On Monday, a judge ordered Kano's Sharia police, known as Hisbah, to perform the wedding ceremony of two TikTokers within 60 days for posting videos of them kissing, an act deemed indecent in Kano's conservative Muslim society.
"The court ordered the Hisbah to marry the man and woman, since they are so in love that they are showing off their romance on TikTok," Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, Kano state judicial spokesman, told AFP.
"The court ordered that the marriage be celebrated within two months," he added.
Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, who has dwarfism, had released videos showing them kissing and hugging each other.
Mr. Wushirya, who has already had several run-ins with the authorities over videos deemed "indecent," was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention.
A Hisbah official confirmed that they received the court order on Monday and had already begun wedding preparations.
"Although the court said we must hold the wedding within 60 days, we are determined to do it as soon as possible," Abba Sufi, director general of Hisbah, told AFP.
According to him, "the future bride and groom have given their consent."
Idris Mai Wushirya's parents were summoned by the Hisbah on Monday, where they gave their "explicit consent," while the Hisbah was trying to contact the family of Basira Yar Guda, who "lives in Zamfara State," more than 300 kilometers away, according to Mr. Sufi.
Kano is one of twelve Muslim-majority states where Sharia law coexists with common law.
The Hisbah was established in 2001 to enforce the provisions of Sharia law in the state.
Kano is home to a thriving film industry, dubbed Kannywood, which produces more than 200 films a month in the Hausa language spoken in the region and throughout West Africa.
The censorship office set up by Muslim preachers and local authorities to monitor Kannywood extended its activities to social media in 2022.
The Hisbah regularly arrests and sentences influencers whose content published on social networks it considers "immoral."
