Lyle and Eleanor Gittens, aged 108 and 107, are now the longest-married couple still alive, united for 83 years.
A love that has lasted for eight decades. Americans Lyle and Eleanor Gittens, aged 108 and 107 respectively, now hold the world record for the longest marriage in the world, reports Guinness World Records . After meeting in 1941 at Clark-Atlanta University, the couple married the following year: they were wed on June 4, 1942, and celebrated their 83rd wedding anniversary this year.
Their combined age has now reached 216 years, making them the oldest married couple of all time, and also the couple with the longest marriage still together as of late October. Until now, the record was held by Brazilians Manoel Angelim Dino and Maria de Sousa Dino with 85 years of marriage. However, he passed away on October 20th at the age of 106.
They met when Lyle played on the university basketball team, and Eleanor came to a game to cheer on the players. The two lovers then planned their wedding, knowing there was a high risk that Lyle would be drafted into the army during World War II . The young man ultimately obtained three days of leave from his military service to marry Eleanor.
He was subsequently sent to Italy with the 92nd Infantry Division, while the young bride was pregnant with their first child and feared she would never see her husband again. She chose to move to New York City to be with her husband's family, where she quickly found a job in the payroll department of an aircraft parts company. After the war, the couple was finally reunited, and Lyle was able to meet Lyle Junior, their eldest son.
The family then settled permanently in New York City, where two daughters, Angela and Ignae, were born. Still as much in love as ever, the couple became city employees. Eleanor even went on to earn a doctorate in education from Fordham University in 1987, at the age of 69.
Since reaching their 100th birthdays, they have lived in Miami, Florida, with their daughter Angela. It's a city where the couple is happy, even though Lyle misses New York, as he admitted to LongeviQuest , a website specializing in tracking supercentenarians . The secret to their long marriage? Nothing complicated, according to Eleanor: "We're in love with each other."
