Un automobiliste fonce sur quatre policiers en uniforme
A man known for acts of violence in France has been arrested and jailed, suspected of having tried to run over four police officers with his car in Brussels on Saturday.
The incident occurred Saturday morning while four police officers were conducting a check on a sidewalk near the Gare du Nord train station in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek. A vehicle traveling the wrong way down the one-way street suddenly sped towards the officers, who "were able to dodge just in time" and avoid being hit, before a violent collision with their car, according to the prosecutor's office.
No police officers were injured, but they are "very shaken" and will be off work for several days, local police announced. The driver responsible for the attack was arrested at the scene. He was jailed on Sunday after appearing before an investigating judge who is handling an inquiry into "attempted murder," a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office told AFP.
According to initial findings released by the prosecutor's office, the suspect, who has not explained his actions, had recently arrived in Belgium from France, where he was banned from entering the country. This foreign national was known to French authorities for several acts of violence, according to the same source. His nationality has not been specified.
"Attacking our police officers is attacking the entire state. Justice must now act with severity," reacted Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin on the X network, stressing that he had conveyed his support to the victims of this attack.
