Mort accidentelle du journaliste sportif Guillaume Di Grazia lors d'une fête taurine
Sports journalist Guillaume Di Grazia, a former cycling commentator on Eurosport, died Tuesday at the age of 52, two days after an accident at a bullfighting festival in the Gard region, his family announced to AFP on Wednesday.
Mr. Di Grazia died "following an accident" which occurred on Sunday "during the votive festival organized in Langlade (Gard)", during "an abrivado, a Camargue tradition during which bulls are led in a race supervised by riders", his family said in a statement sent to AFP.
Recognized as one of France's cycling experts, the journalist celebrated his 52nd birthday on October 4. Having joined Eurosport as an intern in 1999, he became its iconic commentator for the Tour de France.
Mr. Di Grazia left the pay-TV channel this summer. According to the newspaper L'Equipe, he was suspended for the first time in May due to "inappropriate behavior towards a makeup artist," and then a second time in July, which deprived him of the Tour de France.
Besides cycling, he commentated on football, biathlon and ski jumping, his family recalled.
The type of accident that cost the journalist his life is not uncommon at votive festivals organized in the south.
In early September, a 52-year-old man died after being knocked down by a horse and a bull and then hit by a vehicle during a bullfight in the streets of Aramon, a village in the Gard region.
In July, a septuagenarian was fatally hit by a bull during a release in the streets of Générac, another commune in the Gard region.
