Affaire Epstein : Épinglé par un média chinois, le dalaï-lama brise le silence
The Dalai Lama's office asserted on Sunday that the exiled Buddhist spiritual leader, cited in the Epstein files, had "never met" Jeffrey Epstein, after Chinese media established a link between him and the American sex offender.
A search through the millions of documents in the Epstein files, released by the US Department of Justice and reviewed by AFP, reveals the Dalai Lama's name 154 times. However, there is no mention or suggestion of a meeting between him and Epstein.
On Thursday, China Global Television Network (CGTN), a Chinese state-run media outlet, reported that the Dalai Lama appeared at least 169 times in the Epstein files. According to CGTN, an email from 2012, from a redacted sender, suggested to someone that they attend an event on an island where "the Dalai Lama was going to come."
"Some recent media articles and social media posts regarding the 'Epstein files' attempt to establish a link between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Jeffrey Epstein," the Dalai Lama's office said in a statement published on X.
"We can unequivocally confirm that His Holiness never met Jeffrey Epstein and never authorized anyone to meet or interact with him on his behalf," the statement continued.
The mere mention of a person's name in the Epstein files does not imply that this person has committed a wrongdoing.
Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his prison in 2019, after being accused of sex trafficking of minors.
China, which claims that Tibet is an integral part of China, condemns the Buddhist leader who has campaigned throughout his life for greater autonomy for Tibet, calling him a rebel and a separatist.
The 90-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the Dalai Lama, was only 23 when he fled the Tibetan capital Lhasa, fearing for his life after Chinese troops suppressed an uprising in 1959.
He never returned and lives in exile in northern India. He has millions of followers worldwide, including many celebrities.
