Sven Liebich, a former leader of a German neo-Nazi group convicted of incitement to hatred, took advantage of a law based on self-determination that allows a person to choose their own gender to serve his sentence in a women's prison.
His name was Sven Liebich when he was sentenced in 2023 to a year and a half in prison, notably for incitement to hatred. This former leader of the (since banned) German neo-Nazi group Blood und Honour in Saxony-Anhalt in the 1990s has over the years attacked immigrants and representatives of sexual minorities, calling participants in Pride marches "faggots" and "parasites on society," as Le Parisien points out.
However, he will serve his sentence at the Chemnitz Women's Prison, taking advantage of a law that came into force in November 2024. This law, based on self-determination by the former government, allows a person to choose their own gender by a simple personal declaration.

Defying this reform, Sven Liebich has now decided to call herself Marla-Svenja Liebich, a female person. The case has caused a stir in Germany. Embarrassed, the Saxony Ministry of Justice pointed out to the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that in certain cases, additional psychological or medical expertise may be used, according to comments reported by Euronews.
Pending these possible expert reports, Liebich should therefore be imprisoned in the company of women.
