Au moins 19 personnes mortes en Russie depuis début septembre après avoir bu de l'alcool frelaté

At least 19 people have died near St. Petersburg since the beginning of the month, and laboratory tests have shown that metahonel was the cause of death in eight of those cases.

Since the beginning of September, at least 19 cases of fatal poisoning attributed to the consumption of adulterated alcohol have been recorded in the Russian region of Leningrad, near Saint Petersburg, local authorities announced on Friday, September 26.

According to the regional health committee, "19 deaths were recorded during September following alcohol consumption in the Slantsevski district."

Laboratory tests determined that methanol was the cause of death in eight of these cases, according to the same source. Methanol is often used to make adulterated alcohol, a scourge in Russia.

For its part, the Investigation Committee, responsible for the main investigations in the country, announced the arrest of a woman in her sixties and a man in his seventies, suspected of having sold this alcohol to the victims.

In 2016, more than 60 people died in Irkutsk, Siberia, after drinking bath oil that contained methanol.

Although the law punishing methanol trafficking has since been strengthened, the price of vodka remains unaffordable for millions of Russians, particularly in rural areas with very low living standards.
