A military plane carrying banknotes crashed Friday near El Alto airport in Bolivia, killing at least 15 people after veering off the runway and hitting several vehicles.

In Bolivia, a military plane carrying banknotes crashed on Friday near El Alto International Airport, close to La Paz. At least 15 people died, according to firefighters, after the aircraft veered off the runway and struck several vehicles, according to images from local media. "Between 15 and 16 people have been counted (dead)," Colonel Pavel Tovar told reporters at the crash site, revising an earlier toll of 11 deaths.

The aircraft, a C-130 Hercules belonging to the Air Force, was carrying banknotes issued by the country's central bank. According to Reuters, the plane took off from Santa Cruz before crashing after landing, veering off the runway and coming to rest on a nearby avenue in poor weather conditions. Images broadcast by local media show a heavily damaged aircraft and several vehicles involved in the crash.

Scenes of disorder and police intervention

The Bolivian Ministry of Defense confirmed the crash, but was unable to immediately specify whether there were any casualties. The Bolivian state news agency (ABI), quoted by AFP, had reported that "a plane crashed in the afternoon," with an "immediate" mobilization of firefighters to provide assistance.

Scenes of disorder were observed at the scene, as shown by the Unitel television network. Police used tear gas to disperse residents who were trying to retrieve scattered banknotes. Reuters reports that law enforcement also used water cannons to keep the crowd at bay. El Alto airport was temporarily closed, announced the national airline Boliviana de Aviación.
