Bombardement d'une école en Iran: une enquête du New York Times suggère une frappe américaine
Neither the United States nor Israel has confirmed the strike, and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday that the Pentagon was conducting an investigation, assuring that US forces "never target civilians."
AFP was unable to access the site to independently verify the death toll or the circumstances of the events.
Based on satellite images, social media posts and verified videos, the New York Times reported Thursday that the school was badly damaged in a strike that occurred at the same time as attacks on an adjacent naval base of the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Official statements that U.S. forces were attacking naval targets near the Strait of Hormuz, close to which the Iranian base was located, "suggest that they were most likely to have carried out the strike," the New York Times writes.
For its part, the Reuters news agency, relying on two anonymous US officials, indicated on Thursday that US military investigators considered it "likely" that US forces were "responsible" for the strike that hit the school, adding however that the investigations were not finished.
The total death toll has not yet been independently confirmed, but Iranian authorities and state media say the strike killed more than 150 people, including many children, at the Shajarah Tayyebeh primary school.
The New York Times investigation ruled out an Iranian missile strike on the school.
If it is confirmed "that it was an American bomb that hit (the school) Shajarah Tayyebeh, a question will likely be whether the school strike was a mistake or whether it was targeted based on outdated information," the newspaper writes.
Furthermore, an investigation by the French newspaper Le Monde, published on Thursday, confirmed the presence of children and civilian victims in the bombing. "Young children were indeed killed," wrote Le Monde, which stated that it relied on dozens of photos and videos.
