Canada: Trois morts dans une fusillade à Montréal
Three people, including a police officer and the suspect, were killed Monday in a shooting in a Jewish neighborhood of Montreal, police announced.
The third person killed was a resident of the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood in the west of the city, where there are many Jewish businesses and restaurants, according to the same source.
"The immediate threat has been neutralized," explained Montreal police chief (SPVM), Fady Dagher, during a press conference.
"We have a suspect, and he has been shot dead," the official added, reporting an exchange of gunfire between police and the assailant, whose motives are still unknown.
Images on social media, not immediately verified by AFP, showed a man dressed in military attire, armed with a rifle and lying on the ground.
A policewoman was also injured but her life is not in danger, according to Mr. Dagher.
"It's a nightmare," he told reporters. According to him, the last time a Montreal police officer died in the line of duty was 24 years ago, in 2002.
Authorities have not yet provided any information regarding the circumstances of the tragedy or the suspect's motives.
"For now, we don't know the motive behind all this," Quebec's Minister of Internal Security, Ian Lafrenière, told Radio-Canada.
A large police presence was deployed shortly before noon (4:00 PM GMT), residents were urged to stay indoors, and the nearby urban highway was closed to traffic. The operation ended just over three hours later, according to police.
The police explained that they had been alerted by telephone by a witness who reported the presence of a person using a rifle.
"The security of our community remains our top priority," the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) told X, adding that it was "following the situation very closely."
"We invite members of the community to follow (...) the instructions issued by the police authorities," he added.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada offered her "deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty."
"We ask the public to respect the instructions of the SPVM," she added on X.
Christine Fréchette, Premier of Quebec, assured that it was "essential to let the authorities do their job" and that it was necessary to "avoid any speculation".
