Cyberattaques revendiquées en Israël et aux Etats-Unis: qui est le groupe Handala ?
With several claims of cyberattacks against American and Israeli infrastructure and companies, the Handala group has shown itself to be very active since the beginning of the war in the Middle East and openly supports Iran.
This group recently opened a website dedicated to claiming responsibility for cyberattacks, on which it stated on Wednesday that it had successfully attacked the American medical equipment supplier Stryker and the payment solutions company Verifone.
His messages, also published on the social network X and a Telegram channel, openly mention the war between Iran and the United States and Israel.
"This attack constitutes a decisive and direct response to the Zionist regime's airstrikes," Handala wrote on Wednesday regarding the attack on Verifone. "Every blow will receive an even stronger response," he continued.
Although the group is currently generating a lot of buzz, its activity began in late 2023, according to several observers.
Handala, whose name refers to a symbolic figure of the Palestinian people, was initially categorized as a "hacktivist" (a contraction of hacker and activist) group supporting Palestine.
Like most cyber attacker groups, it is also associated with other groups, of which it could be a simple alias.
Handala is now described by many cybersecurity experts as a group affiliated with the Iranian state.
According to a note published at the end of February by the research team of the American company Palo Alto Networks, this is now the "most prominent" Iranian group of cyber attackers.
"Even if they exaggerate, they still retain a certain credibility regarding the attacks they carry out," said Gil Messing, head of cyber intelligence at the Israeli company Check Point, on Wednesday.
Handala's methods of operation appear to be varied. The group has successively claimed responsibility for attacks on infrastructure, but has also published online personal information linked to members of the Israeli Air Force.
"Malicious actors such as Handala (...) have made the Israeli defense industrial base a priority," said Google Threat Intelligence, a subsidiary of the American tech giant, in February.
"The objective of these campaigns is not only disruption, but also the degradation of Israel's national security apparatus by exposing its military capabilities, intimidating employees in the Defense sector (...) and eroding public trust," the company also stated.
