Donald Trump : « J’ai sauvé l’OTAN »

US President Donald Trump has once again provoked reactions on the international political stage. In a message posted on his social media account, he bluntly declared, "I'm the one who saved NATO," presenting himself as the principal architect of the Atlantic Alliance's strengthening during his presidency. This statement, consistent with his style, in which he claims credit for strengthening NATO during his term.

As a reminder, during a conference, Donald Trump primarily targeted member countries, accusing them of not respecting their financial commitments, pushing them to increase their military spending. His supporters believe that this pressure helped strengthen NATO.

True to his direct and assertive tone, Trump claims a central role in the evolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. During his first presidency (2017-2021), he repeatedly criticized member countries, accusing them of not respecting their financial commitments in defense matters.

According to Donald Trump, his firm stances forced several member countries to increase their defense budgets, thus strengthening NATO both financially and operationally. In his view, this policy prevented the Alliance, long dependent on American military spending, from weakening.

Its supporters believe that this approach has rebalanced responsibilities between allies and modernized NATO in the face of new security threats.

However, this interpretation is far from being unanimously accepted. Many diplomats and analysts point out that Donald Trump's repeated statements have also weakened the cohesion of the Alliance, sowing doubt about the American commitment to collective defense.

His opponents believe that the increase in European military spending was already underway before he came to power and that his sometimes hostile rhetoric towards traditional allies has weakened transatlantic trust.

This statement comes in a political context where Donald Trump is seeking to highlight his record in foreign policy.
