Donald Trump : « L’équipe iranienne est la bienvenue à la Coupe du monde »
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the Iranian national team will be able to participate in the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This information was reported Wednesday by FIFA President Gianni Infantino following a meeting with the American leader.
In a message posted on Instagram, the head of world football stated that Donald Trump had confirmed to him that the Iranian team would "of course be welcome" to play in the competition scheduled from June 11 to July 19, reports AFP.
The White House also confirmed these remarks, while questions remained about the participation of Iran's national football team due to geopolitical tensions.
Placed in Group G, Iran must face Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand in the first round, with matches scheduled on American soil, notably in Los Angeles and Seattle.
Just a few hours earlier, however, the Iranian Minister of Sports, Ahmad Doyanmali, had mentioned on national television the possibility of a withdrawal, believing that the security conditions for the players were not met.
Despite these tensions, Gianni Infantino emphasized the role of football as a unifying force. "We all need an event like the World Cup to bring people together," he said.
