Donald Trump dit que les États-Unis pourraient ne pas venir en aide à l’Otan en cas de besoin
The US president reiterated his criticism of NATO on Friday, March 27, during a business summit in Miami. He accused NATO members of refusing to help him secure the Strait of Hormuz.
Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States might not come to NATO's aid if needed, reiterating his criticism of the Atlantic Alliance, at a business forum in Miami.
"They simply weren't there," the US president said, as quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP), referring to Washington's request - which went unanswered - for military support from its allies to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
Repeated attacks against NATO
"We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO, hundreds of billions, to protect them, and we would have always been there for them, but now, in view of their actions, I suppose we no longer have to be, do we?" he said.
In recent weeks, the American president has repeatedly made belligerent remarks toward NATO, notably calling it a "PAPER TIGER" and "COWS" on his Truth Social network. The United States "will remember this," he had already declared on Thursday during a cabinet meeting.
Contribution to efforts
The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan stated in a joint communiqué on March 19 that they were ready "to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Gibraltar," which normally carries one-fifth of the world's oil production. However, they ruled out any direct military involvement. Traffic through this narrow waterway is virtually paralyzed, leading to soaring energy prices.
During his speech in Miami, before business leaders and investors gathered for the "FII Priority" summit, Donald Trump once again assured that the military operation against Iran, which is about to enter its fifth week, was going very well.
