Affaire Epstein : Ce que l'on sait des liens entre le financier et Karim Wade
The recent release of more than three million pages of emails and documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, made public by a committee of the US Congress, has brought to light professional exchanges involving Karim Meïssa Wade, son of former President Abdoulaye Wade.
These correspondences, dating from 2010 and 2011, focus on business opportunities in Africa and international networks.
Karim Wade, who held key positions under his father's presidency from 2009 to 2012 – notably as Minister of State for International Cooperation, Spatial Planning, Air Transport and Infrastructure – appears in several emails exchanged with Epstein.
In 2010, Epstein wrote to Wade from New York: "I'm with Prince Andrew at my house in New York, call if you get a chance." Wade replied, mentioning a call to arrange a meeting with Sultan Bin Sulayem of Dubai World.
In November of the same year, Wade mentioned a trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, followed by a stopover in Paris, suggesting a meeting the next day or the day after: “I am off tonight to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and will be in Paris tomorrow night. Suggest we catch up tonight night or on Wednesday.” Epstein agreed and asked Wade’s assistant to coordinate. These exchanges referred to discussions about “opportunities in Africa” and trips to Paris, Beijing, or Riyadh.
In 2011, Epstein facilitated a meeting between Wade and Jes Staley, a JPMorgan executive, to discuss a major crude oil deal. Later, he attempted to assist in the development of offshore gas in Senegal.
Five years later, in 2016, while Wade was in exile in Qatar following a conviction for illicit enrichment in 2015, Epstein introduced him to the American economist Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury and President of Harvard.
Epstein described Karim Wade as "one of the most important figures in West Africa," "the most charismatic and rational of all Africans," and mentioned an offshore gas discovery. Summers, initially perplexed, asked, "Who is the guy you have set me up with?" Epstein referred to Wade as a "very close friend" and predicted he could become the next president of Senegal.
These revelations highlight Epstein's business networks in Africa, with no apparent link to his criminal activities.
