Spain is once again in mourning after a train disaster. Near Barcelona, a train crashed into a retaining wall on Tuesday, killing one person and seriously injuring four others.

In Spain, following the tragic accident this past weekend that left 42 dead and over a hundred injured, another rail incident was reported Tuesday in the province of Barcelona. A commuter train struck a collapsed retaining wall on the tracks in the municipality of Gelida, Catalonia, killing one person and seriously injuring several others, according to regional authorities.

"There are four seriously injured and one person who has died," said Claudi Gallardo, head of the Catalan fire department's operations. According to Rodalies de Catalunya, the public railway operator in the region, the person killed was an employee of the company. Local media outlets report that it was the train driver.

Most of the victims were in the front carriage.

The Catalan Civil Protection agency stated on X that "a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks, causing an accident involving a passenger train." Emergency services treated 37 people, most of whom were traveling in the front carriage, which was the most severely damaged, Claudi Gallardo explained. Eleven ambulances were dispatched to the scene, they added on their social media.

The national rail network manager, Adif, indicated that the wall collapse was caused by a storm and heavy rains affecting a large part of the region. On X, it added that service remained suspended on suburban lines "due to the effects of the storm on the infrastructure."
