Etats-Unis: au moins quatre morts et dix blessés dans des tirs en Californie

At least four people died and ten others were injured in shootings that occurred Saturday night in Stockton, California, in the western United States, during the Thanksgiving long weekend, police announced.

"We can confirm that at this stage approximately 14 individuals have been hit by gunfire and that four victims have died," the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, of which Stockton is the capital, wrote in a statement on X.

Police stated that the shootings could have been "targeted".

Shots were reported early Saturday evening on an avenue in Stockton, the sheriff's office said, adding that the investigation was ongoing and information was extremely "limited".

"Investigators are examining all possibilities (...) and working to determine the circumstances that may have led to this tragedy," the local police further wrote in their statement.

Those affected, including minors and adults, were transported to local hospitals, Sheriff's spokeswoman Heather Brent said at a press conference.

These shootings come after a deliberate attack on Wednesday on the other side of the country, in the federal capital Washington, when a 29-year-old Afghan national who had been a refugee in the United States since 2021 killed a young National Guard soldier and seriously wounded a second soldier.

With more firearms in circulation than inhabitants, the United States has the highest firearm mortality rate of any developed country.

Mass shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far failed to stem, with many Americans remaining very attached to their guns.

In 2024, if we exclude suicides, at least 16,700 people were killed by firearms.

And since the assassination in September of Charlie Kirk, a popular influencer among conservative and Trumpist youth, the ultra-polarized country fears an increase in acts of political gun violence.
