États-Unis : une défaillance moteur d'un Boeing 777 provoque un incendie à l'aéroport de Washington
A Boeing 777 was forced to turn back after an engine failure during takeoff. The flight, bound for Tokyo, returned to Washington Dulles Airport less than an hour after leaving the runway.
Another incident has been reported involving an aircraft from the American manufacturer. A Boeing 777 operated by United Airlines had to turn back after takeoff. Flying from Washington to Tokyo, the aircraft experienced an engine failure shortly after departure, causing a fire near the runway.
"Shortly after takeoff, United Flight 803 returned to Washington Dulles and landed safely to address a power loss issue with one of its engines," the airline said, adding that none of the 275 passengers and 15 crew members were injured.
"Following the incident, the aircraft was seen maneuvering (...) to jettison fuel, a crucial safety procedure to reduce the aircraft's weight before attempting an emergency landing," explained the specialist website AirLive.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy responded on X, adding details: "A piece of the engine cowling broke off and caught fire, starting a brush fire on the ground."
The runway affected by the fire was closed "for a limited time," the spokesperson for the Minister of Transport announced. She added that the federal capital's airport has numerous runways, and the incident therefore did not affect the rest of the airport 's traffic .
The aircraft was reportedly delivered in November 1998, according to the registration number provided by the website. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that it is gathering data on the incident to determine whether an investigation will be opened in the coming days.
