Sad news for Ecuadorian football. Former international Mario Pineida was shot dead by gunmen on Wednesday outside a butcher shop in the port city of Guayaquil. He was with his mother and wife. His wife also died in the attack. His mother escaped with a minor head injury.
The attackers arrived on motorcycles
"We are deeply saddened to announce that we have been officially informed of the death of our player Mario Pineida, an event that occurred following an attack of which he was the victim," wrote the player's club, Barcelona SC, in a statement published on X.
According to the news site "Primicias", the two assailants arrived on a motorcycle. They opened fire on the Ecuadorian international, his mother and his wife, before fleeing.
A city that recorded 1,900 homicides between January and September
Police have opened an investigation. Pineida, 33, played nine international matches for La Tri (the nickname of Ecuador's national team). Before joining Barcelona SC, he played for Fluminense in Brazil.
The port city of Guayaquil, where he tragically died, is quite dangerous. Between January and September, 1,900 homicides were recorded there.
