France: l'ex-Premier ministre de Villepin propose un système onusien de réparation des guerres "illégales"
"You destroy. You repair." Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin argued on Sunday for a UN mechanism that would force countries responsible for "illegal" wars to pay financial reparations, in light of the hostilities initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran.
"My proposal is that from now on, we should provide, through a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, since the Security Council is blocked, for a principle of redress," he said on BFMTV.
"Any country that engages in an illegitimate, illegal intervention must pay the price of rebuilding what it has broken. You destroy, you repair," he declared, believing that the decisions of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu should have "real and tangible consequences."
Dominique de Villepin, who, as foreign minister, in 2003 carried France's "no" to the US war in Iraq at the UN, also believed that sanctions should be considered against Israel, which, in response to Hezbollah fire, has expanded its offensive in Lebanon.
"There are possible economic sanctions, there are possible political sanctions," he said, while also pointing to responsibilities on the part of the Lebanese government and Hezbollah itself.
Dominique de Villepin, who is preparing a candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, believes that France is not active enough in mobilizing the European Union on the Lebanese issue and more broadly on this conflict in the Middle East.
"France is missing the boat, missing out on history," he said, judging that the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, "is saving Europe's honor" by refusing to allow the United States to use its bases to attack Iran.
The former diplomat with the sharp tongue has gained ground in the French political landscape after a series of highly critical statements on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's offensive in Gaza.
"We are facing an Israeli plan (...). After the reoccupation of Gaza, the second step will be deportation. The political objective of Benjamin Netanyahu and his government is the deportation of the population of Gaza, which is the mark of ethnic cleansing, of territorial cleansing," he notably denounced last year on Franceinfo radio.
