Le streamer français Jean Pormanove meurt en plein direct, une enquête ouverte
French streamer Jean Pormanove died Sunday night in Contes, near Nice. He was 46 years old. His real name was Raphaël Graven, and he rose to prominence by building a large community of gamers on the Kick platform. An investigation has been opened.
According to BFMTV, police and firefighters responded to the home of Jean Pormanove, alias “JP,” in Contes (Alpes-Maritimes) on the morning of August 18, where they found him unconscious. The news of his death was confirmed a few hours later by the influencer “Naruto” on Instagram.
“I always dreaded the day I would have to write these words. Sadly, last night, JP (Raphaël Graven) left us,” he wrote. “I ask you all to respect his memory and not share the video of his last breath in his sleep.”
A few hours before this announcement, a clip of a live broadcast was circulating on social media. It showed Jean Pormanove lying motionless on a mattress, his head partially covered, and unresponsive to his teammates' requests. "He's really in a weird position," the video could be heard saying, before the broadcast was abruptly cut off.
Opening of an investigation
An investigation has been opened by the Nice investigation unit to determine the cause of death. At this stage, no suspicious evidence has been found, the prosecutor's office told Le Parisien. However, an autopsy is still to be performed.
Humiliation and harassment
Followed by more than 500,000 subscribers on TikTok and Twitch, Jean Pormanove had migrated to the Kick platform, known for its weak regulation.
Known for his live video game sessions, the streamer also participated in online challenges alongside other streamers known as “Naruto” and “Safine.” Last January, these two Nice-based influencers were taken into custody and later released as part of a preliminary investigation opened after an article by Mediapart. The investigative media outlet reported on videos in which Jean Pormanove and another disabled person were shown being subjected to humiliation and violence. The two streamers denied any wrongdoing and denied the charges.
