Gaza: 75 millions de dollars pour remettre le foot sur pied (Trump)
A $75 million fund, partly financed by FIFA, will be launched for the reconstruction of football infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, ravaged by two years of war, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday.
"I am also pleased to announce that FIFA will help raise a total of $75 million for projects in Gaza, which I believe are related to football," Mr. Trump said in Washington at the inaugural meeting of the "Peace Council" he created and dedicated to the reconstruction of the overpopulated and war-ravaged Palestinian enclave between the Islamist movement Hamas and Israel.
"You're going to build pitches and bring in the biggest stars in the world, people who are bigger stars than you and me, Gianni," Mr. Trump told Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president who was present for the event.
"This is really something important (...) and if I can I will go there with you," he added, while a fragile ceasefire has been in effect since October.
In a statement, Gianni Infantino welcomed the "signing of a historic partnership agreement (with the "Peace Council") which will promote investment in football to support the reconstruction process in post-conflict areas".
The plan for Gaza must begin as soon as security conditions allow and last three years. It includes, in particular, "the construction of 50 FIFA Arena mini-pitches near schools and residential areas, five standard-sized pitches in several governorates, a high-end FIFA Academy, and a new national stadium with a capacity of 20,000 seats."
Without mentioning any figures, FIFA specifies that the agreement will mobilize "funding from leaders and international institutions".
Mr. Infantino and Mr. Trump have been showing their complicity since January 2025 and the return to power of the American president, who received in December a newly created "FIFA Peace Prize".
On Thursday, the head of FIFA sported a red cap emblazoned with "USA" and "45-47" for the two terms of the Republican billionaire, offered to each participant of the "Peace Council".
On October 13, 2025, at a summit on Gaza in Egypt, Mr. Infantino announced that FIFA would launch "a fund to help rebuild football-related facilities" in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, calling on "individuals and entities around the world to contribute to this common effort."
The war in Gaza, triggered by Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has destroyed almost all sports infrastructure in the small 365 km2 territory and brought an end to the football championship or home matches of the national team, while hundreds of athletes have been injured or killed in the conflict.
