A "heinous act." Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the stabbing of a newly elected mayor of a small West German town at the end of September.
"We fear for the life" of Social Democrat Iris Stalzer, the German leader declared on X, while several media outlets, without citing identified sources, described the elected official as having been seriously injured after being attacked outside her home in Herdecke, near Dortmund (northwest).
A "horrible act"
"A few minutes ago, we learned that the newly elected mayor, Iris Stalzer, was stabbed in Herdecke," confirmed Matthias Miersch, leader of the SPD parliament, during a press briefing early this afternoon. "We are thinking of her and wish her well in overcoming and surviving this horrific act," he added. "We cannot say anything about the circumstances at the moment, but we are deeply shocked," the parliamentary group leader added.
According to the regional public broadcaster WDR, Iris Stalzer was allegedly attacked with a knife "several times" and "in the immediate vicinity of her home." Seriously injured, she managed to drag herself inside, according to the same source. Iris Stalzer had just won the election in this town of just over 20,000 inhabitants. She was due to be officially sworn in at the beginning of November.
