Groenland: Trump étudie "plusieurs options", y compris militaire
Donald Trump is considering "several options" to seize Greenland, including "using the military," according to his spokeswoman, further fueling concerns in Europe about the fate of the Arctic island, an autonomous Danish territory.
The US president "has made it clear that taking possession of Greenland is a national security priority for the United States, and it is vital to keeping our adversaries in the Arctic region at bay," Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday.
"The president and his team are discussing several options to fulfill this important foreign policy objective, and of course, using the U.S. military is always an option available to the commander-in-chief," she added.
According to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told US lawmakers that Mr. Trump's preferred option was to buy Greenland from Denmark, ruling out an imminent invasion.
The determined tone of the White House contrasts sharply with the alarmist calls for dialogue from Europeans in the face of US demands.
Greenland and the Danish government have called for swift talks with Mr. Rubio, hoping to clear up "misunderstandings".
Nuuk and Copenhagen particularly dispute the recurring argument of Donald Trump, who repeats that he needs this territory located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean to ensure his security against China and Russia.
"We do not share this idea that Greenland is covered in Chinese investment," said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. "We are looking after the kingdom," he insisted, adding that there was no need to "dramatize" the situation.
Denmark has invested heavily in Arctic security over the past 12 months, allocating some 90 billion kroner (1.2 billion euros) for this purpose.
The US president ridiculed the expense on Sunday, saying: "You know what Denmark did recently to boost security in Greenland? They added a dog sled."
French President Emmanuel Macron explained Tuesday evening that he could not imagine the United States "violating Danish sovereignty." Europeans are preparing to "retaliate" against any form of intimidation from the United States, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot asserted Wednesday.
Given that Denmark, including Greenland, is a member of NATO, an American attack against one of the Alliance's members would mean "the end of everything," including the international security order established at the end of World War II, warned Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
"This is not just a conflict with the Kingdom of Denmark (...), but with the whole of Europe," she told DR television.
"The future of Denmark and Greenland are decisions for, solely, the people of Denmark and Greenland," said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Canada is also attracting the interest of Donald Trump, who keeps saying that the country should become the 51st state of the United States.
France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom had previously also expressed their support for Copenhagen, in a similar joint statement also stressing that the kingdom is "part" of NATO like the United States, which is itself linked to Denmark by a defense agreement.
The Nordic foreign ministers issued a joint statement reiterating this same idea of sovereignty.
Several times, Greenland, supported by its governing power, has said that it is not for sale and that it alone decides its future.
Donald Trump has long had designs on the Arctic island of 57,000 inhabitants, which he claims belongs to the natural sphere of influence of the United States.
The president and his entourage have brought this demand back to the forefront with renewed fervor in the wake of the shock military operation carried out by the United States in Venezuela.

Après le Vénézuela (pas encore certain) pour le pétrole, Trump annonce le Groenland. Une vaste région riche, avec très peu d'habitants. Donc, si les habitants refusent, les USA pourraient les exterminer en un temps très court. Moins de temps qu'avec les indiens autochtones des USA même. Peut-être même que ce ne sera pas nécessaire d'inventer des accusations de détention d'armes de destruction massive, ou de trafic de drogue, ou même de soutien aux terroristes djihadistes des USA au Sahel. De toute façon, les USA auraient lancé pareils mensonges dans les médias aussi que beaucoup "d'intellectuels " défendraient que c'est vrai. N'oubliez pas que l'USAID était chargé de financer cette acceptation d'être des "intellectuels idiots utiles ".
Et pourquoi les USA se lancent dans cette course d'agression du droit international pour mettre la main, de force, sur les ressources de pays faibles ? C'est parce que l'Amérique croit que cela pourra freiner sa chute causée par l'abandon du dollar par le monde, surtout que l'Arabie Saoudite a décidé de ne plus vendre uniquement en dollars. Les pétrodollars peuvent même devenir des pétro-CFA. L'Amérique perd les moyens de sa grandeur. Et, elle ne veut pas mourir seule.
