A special Air France flight intended to repatriate French citizens from the United Arab Emirates was forced to turn back on Thursday amid tensions surrounding the war in Iran. The aircraft, which was flying from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Dubai via Cairo, was to pick up French nationals as part of an operation organized with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The airline stated that "due to the evolving security situation at the destination, flight AF4190 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Dubai on March 5, via Cairo, turned back." Air France also emphasized that the aircraft was not carrying any passengers, as it was en route to Dubai to evacuate French nationals.
Complexity of repatriation operations
French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot explained on X that the decision followed reports of missile fire in the area. "This flight, intended to repatriate our citizens from the United Arab Emirates, was forced to turn back Thursday evening due to missile fire in the area," he stated, adding that "this situation reflects the instability in the region and the complexity of repatriation operations."

He also reiterated that the safety of those involved remained the priority. “We are fully aware of the legitimate expectations of our citizens on the ground, but their return can only take place under guaranteed safety conditions,” he stated. Air France clarified that passenger lists are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and indicated that its teams remain mobilized “alongside @francediplo,” while the airline has suspended its regular flights in the region.
