"Que chacun reste chez soi et les moutons seront bien gardés" : Rififi entre Macron et Meloni

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday asked Giorgia Meloni to stop "commenting on what is happening in other countries," after the Italian Prime Minister's remarks about the death in France of nationalist activist Quentin Deranque, who was beaten to death by political opponents.

"If everyone stays at home and the sheep will be well guarded," Mr. Macron quipped from New Delhi, on the sidelines of an official visit to India, referring to Ms. Meloni's remarks on Wednesday.

She had notably written on X that "the death of a boy barely over 20 years old, attacked by groups linked to left-wing extremism in a climate of ideological hatred which is spreading in several countries, is a wound for the whole of Europe".

"I am always struck by the fact that people who are nationalists, who do not want to be bothered at home, are always the first to comment on what is happening in other countries," Emmanuel Macron retorted.

The French head of state was speaking nearly a week after the fatal attack on Quentin Deranque, 23, in Lyon, for which eleven suspects are in custody.

Most are linked to far-left movements, and among them are three close associates of radical left-wing MP Raphaël Arnault, founder of the groupuscule La Jeune Garde Antifasiste, dissolved by decree in June 2025 notably for "violence".

"Every time there are people who explain to you that they have set up militias for self-protection because there is a discourse of violence on the other side (...), they are not simply committing a political error but also a moral error and they are creating the conditions for what is happening. So everyone everywhere must clean house," Mr. Macron added during a press briefing.

"We must remain calm" and "recall the principles of the Republic," the president urged, targeting "far-left movements" as well as "far-right movements which sometimes also have militants in their ranks who justify violent action."

"Nothing can justify, neither on one side nor the other, nor even in a face-to-face confrontation which is deadly for the Republic (...) violent action," he insisted again.
