Il mange 3 kilos de bonbons en 3 jours et passe 6 jours à l’hôpital
In the UK, a man spent six days in hospital after eating three kilos of candy in just three days. His intestines were filled with gelatin.
The extra kilo. After a year of silence, Nathan Rimmington finally decided to share his sugary misadventure. In 2024, the 33-year-old truck driver was at home when he began to experience severe abdominal pain. The cause? A massive consumption of candy : three kilos in three days. The result: six days in the hospital.
Nathan Rimmington told the Mirror that he ordered an XXL bag of his favorite treats from Amazon: spicy Cola bottles. Three kilos of sweets, purchased for 18 pounds, or around 20 euros.
In just three evenings, these tangy little bottles served as his dessert. A big sweet tooth, Nathan Rimmington wasn't immediately worried.
But 48 hours later, the first warning signs appeared: violent stomach cramps. "I had excruciating pain in my stomach (...) I couldn't even get out of bed, I was sweating, it was horrible," he recalls.
Worried, he went to his doctor. "I was lying on the floor in the waiting room, the pain was so intense," he says. However, he neglected to mention his excessive candy consumption. Despite this silence, the doctor decided to have him hospitalized urgently, given his patient's worrying condition.
Once in the emergency room at Rotherham Hospital, near Sheffield, Nathan Rimmington was quickly taken into care. A battery of tests were carried out, and the results revealed that abnormally high levels of gelatin were present in his intestines. The diagnosis was then made: acute diverticulitis, a painful inflammation of the colon.
It was only after this diagnosis that Nathan finally admitted to having "stuffed" himself with 3 kilos of candy in just three evenings. "The doctors laughed at me," he confides with a hint of self-deprecation.
Placed on a drip and banned from solid food, he spent six days under observation in the hospital.
Now fully recovered, Nathan has learned from this mishap, to the point of completely stopping his candy consumption. "It's a bit like post-traumatic stress: as soon as I see a bottle of Coke, I feel like I'm going to end up in the emergency room," he concludes.
