Iran: un jeune homme décède après s'être immolé par le feu
An Iranian man who set himself on fire to protest the eviction of his business by the municipality in the southwest of the country died of his injuries on Tuesday, state media reported.
The Etemad newspaper reported that Ahmad Baledi, 20, doused himself with gasoline before setting himself on fire on November 2 in Ahvaz, the provincial capital of Khuzestan.
"After setting himself on fire, this young man suffered burns over 70% of his body and was transferred to a hospital in Ahvaz for treatment, but he died today despite the efforts of the medical staff," state television said Tuesday.
Following the tragedy, the city's mayor and a municipal official were arrested, accused of having acted inappropriately in this case, the Mizan Online news site, an organ of the judiciary, reported on Monday.
They are "currently free on bail," Mizan said, adding that "several people who sought to create tension and chaos on social media have also been arrested and are currently free on bail."
"The municipality, independently of the instructions of the judicial authority (...), returned arbitrarily and at an inappropriate time to the location concerned to evacuate this store," said Ahvaz prosecutor Amir Khalafian, quoted by Mizan.
Mr. Khalafian explained that upon the expiration of the store's lease, the municipality had asked the young man to vacate it, which he had refused.
On Tuesday, after the death of the young man, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian ordered the Interior Minister to form a special commission to examine the circumstances of the case.
