L'Iran exécute un homme accusé d'espionnage au profit d'Israël

Iran executed a man convicted of spying for Israel, a sworn enemy of the Islamic Republic, the judiciary's press organ announced Saturday, the latest in a series since a war in June between the two countries.

The death sentence for Aghil Keshavarz, "found guilty of espionage in favor of the Zionist regime, communication and cooperation with the regime", was carried out "after being confirmed by the Supreme Court and following legal procedures", the Mizan news agency reported.

This man, described as an "agent of Mossad," the Israeli foreign intelligence service, was arrested in April-May 2025 in northwestern Iran, but the case was not made public.

The death sentence was pronounced on the basis of the "explicit and clear confessions of the accused", as well as "evidence" including photos and video recordings "made at military and security sites", Mizan adds.

Iran and Israel engaged in a war in June triggered by an unprecedented Israeli attack on June 13 against military and nuclear facilities on Iranian territory as well as populated areas.

This conflict lasted 12 days, and the United States briefly participated by striking three major Iranian nuclear sites. A ceasefire has been in effect since June 24.

Since the war, Iran has promised swift trials for those arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Israel, announcing multiple arrests and the executions of at least ten people convicted of working with Mossad.

Iran, which does not recognize Israel, has long accused it of carrying out sabotage operations against its nuclear facilities and assassinating its scientists.

In October, Tehran tightened its legislation. From now on, "any intelligence or espionage activity" on behalf of Israel, the United States or other governments and groups deemed hostile to Iran "will be punished by the confiscation of all assets (...) and is subject to the death penalty."

The previous law did not target any country in particular, and espionage was not necessarily punishable by death.
