South Sudan and Israel are reportedly discussing a deal to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to the East African country, a plan rejected by Palestinian authorities.
Israel is reportedly considering moving Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to South Sudan, a country plagued by violence. The two countries have reportedly begun talks toward a deal, several sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The same sources said the prospect of settling Palestinians in South Sudan was discussed during meetings between Israeli officials and South Sudanese Foreign Minister Monday Semaya Kumba during his visit to the country last month. The South Sudanese Foreign Ministry described reports of the plan as "baseless" on Wednesday, August 13.
Meanwhile, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel, who was visiting the South Sudanese capital of Juba this week, said the talks were not about relocation. Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was contacting several countries to find a destination for Palestinians wishing to leave Gaza, without providing further details.
The Palestinian leadership and people "reject any plan or idea to relocate any of our citizens to South Sudan or elsewhere," said Wasel Abu Youssef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee. Arab and international leaders have similarly rejected the Jewish state's plan. Palestinians believe it would be a new "Nakba" (catastrophe), a reference to the exodus of hundreds of thousands of people during the 1948 war.
