Italie : Furieux de la défaite de leur équipe, ils caillassent le bus adverse et tuent le chauffeur
"It's the effect of a sick culture, one that tolerates violence in stadiums, in the stands, in the streets. That minimizes it. That turns a blind eye. That normalizes hatred in the name of sport," commented former footballer Claudio Marchisio after the death of a coach driver in Rieti, Italy, this Sunday. The 65-year-old victim was the second driver of the vehicle carrying the Pistoia basketball team, Italy, according to Italian media Sky.
She died after the match between her team and Rieti, where the visitors won the match. Enraged by the result, supporters of the home team waited for their opponents' fans' bus outside the stadium and threw stones at it. One of the projectiles broke and went through the windshield, hitting the driver in the head.
“How is it possible to die like this?”
The sixty-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he eventually died. There were many reactions following the driver's death. In addition to the former international football player, Italy's Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, took to his X account to comment: "How is it possible to die like this?" He also called the perpetrators "criminals who have become murderers, and who can never be called fans."
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, quoted by Reuters, denounced "an unacceptable and senseless act of violence." An investigation has been launched. Investigators were able to rely on DNA analysis of traces left on stones and other projectiles. These findings have already led to the identification of 12 suspects, three of whom have been arrested and imprisoned, local police said.
