Italie: grève générale et manifestations de soutien aux Palestiniens

A general strike in Italy called by unions in support of Palestinians and the Gaza aid flotilla intercepted by Israel is likely to cause widespread traffic disruption on Friday, as protesters began gathering for a second day of demonstrations in Rome.

About forty boats from the Global Sumud flotilla were intercepted by Israel during an operation lasting approximately 12 hours, an Israeli official said Thursday evening. Thousands of people marched Thursday in several European countries and Mexico to denounce the interception.

On Thursday evening, demonstrations took place in Milan and Rome, where some 10,000 people marched from the Colosseum.

On Friday morning in Rome, protesters began gathering to march to the large square in front of Termini central station, where trains scheduled for the morning were delayed by up to 80 minutes or cancelled altogether.

"The squares will be packed," Maurizio Landini, leader of the CGIL union, told Radio Anch'io on Friday.

"This shows the humanity and determination of honest people who want to end the genocide and who are doing what governments and states have pretended not to see or are even complicit in," Landini said.

In Milan and other cities, passengers suffered similar delays and cancellations, with national rail company Trenitalia warning that the nationwide strike would continue until 8:59 p.m. on Friday.

"Today, a million Italians will find themselves stuck on trains," Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who also serves as transport minister, said on television.

At the port of Livorno, inbound and outbound commercial traffic has been blocked, local media reported.

The start of the strike coincides with the announcement by the Italian Foreign Ministry of the release by Israel of four Italian parliamentarians arrested in the Global Sumud flotilla, which aims to break the Israeli siege of Gaza.

The two Italian MPs and two Italian MEPs were transferred to Tel Aviv airport and were due to arrive in Rome on Friday, the ministry said.

According to Italian authorities, 40 Italians were present in the flotilla.
