Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday the launch of a plan to strengthen the country's defense capabilities. Canada aims to rely more heavily on domestic companies to reduce its dependence on the United States, a partner considered less reliable since Donald Trump's re-election.
Canada launched its multi-billion dollar plan on Tuesday to strengthen its military by relying more on domestic companies to reduce its dependence on the United States, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP).
"We have relied too heavily on our geography and on others to protect us," said Mark Carney during a visit to the premises of CAE, a company specializing in simulation technologies for the defense and aviation sectors.
"This has created vulnerabilities that we can no longer afford and dependencies that are no longer viable," he added.
"The world has changed"
This Canadian defense industrial strategy is part of the country's commitment to invest $82 billion (approximately €69 billion) over five years in defense, to align Canada with NATO's targets of 2% by the end of the year and 5% of GDP by 2035.
Mark Carney has been repeating for months that the world has become increasingly dangerous and that the United States is no longer a reliable partner that Canada can count on for its protection.
